If a turret bitches about its job and nobody is around to hear it, does it make a sound? You bet it does. “A Day in the Life of a Turret” catches two turrets on the job during a typical day at the Aperture Science Enrichment Center, and the monotony that lies within.

The background music is by Damn Dangerous and is called “Nine to Five“.

    The only thing I would change is when they hum the theme is to either make the humming in the same key as the background music, or fade the background music out somehow, it’s in a different key so it sounds distracting (to me anyway).

    No, actually it did originate from a typo. See how P is right next to O? It’s easy to hit it by accident, especially in the heat of the moment (Though why he thought it originated in RTS’s is beyond me.)
    However, arguing about how to pronounce a typo is just silly. Anyone who uses it is being a bit silly in the first place (And hopefully everyone that says it knows it. Tongue in cheek is always nice, but some people are just dumb.), so they don’t take it too seriously.

    It’s like arguing “HEY THAT CARTOON DRAGON SHOULDN’T BE PINK BECAUSE DRAGONS ARE ACTUALLY GREEN OR OLIVE DRAB!”.

    Acccctually, from what I heared, PWNED is a combination of OWNED but using just a Pistol(usually the least powerful weapon in any good FPS). Killing someone with just a pistol is apparently the most vindictive move in an online FPS. Meaning the pistol bearer is l33t and the victim just got PWNED.

    So, to sum up, that spiel explains being Pistol-OWNED, or POWNED. PWNED for short.

    I recently read an article BY Blizzard claiming that PWN was a typo created by one of their pvp map designers for Warcraft: Orcs & Humans (yes Warcraft I) when creating an endgame message of ” OWNS ” there was a typo, that slipped all the way to production.

    There was much documented use of the word OWN prior to this point, but their theory stands plausible, IMO. If I find a link, I’ll post it for your argumentative pleasure.

    Pronunciation, I say poned, just because I know it should be owned. Kind of like I say roffle and DoubleyouTeeEff

    Found this from DubiousQuality (yes, I’m a few days behind on Stumbling/Digging/etc). Almost stopped it, as the first 30-45 seconds wasn’t that interesting. But man, it gets so much better. It really picks up at the tic-tac-toe game, and just improves from there to the end.

    Especially love when the companion cube shows up, albeit so briefly.

    PWNED was a typo that dates almost exclusively back to 1997, Quake2. Do some research, planetquake.com had an article about it back in 1997 about it. It came from having to quickly type “owned” when playing, because there was no voice over.

    The p was hit with the right hand ring finger from hastily typing.

    Man. I StumbleUpon this vid about once every two days and I GLADLY sit through it each time. The voices are great. The dialogue is hilarious. “what the shit?” “Balls.” Hahahaha. That stuff really captured the essence of humor today. I even captured the audio and made it an mp3 that I listen to while I do other stuff around the house.

    I read this whole thread/comment board because I was hoping that someone had asked you how you made the voices. I am also very interested in how that was done. I’ve been experimenting with tune correction software and it seems that if I apply a little phase before I auto-tune I can get a pretty decent effect but I would still love to know how you all did that. I am really concerned with the humming part because that style would be a perfect background thing for a few of my songs. I’m hoping that you either have a killer sound card with a voice mod proggie or you use an auto tuner to get a “Cher effect” going; either that or I am way off. Hahahaha.

    Either way, thanks for makin’ this vid cause I Laugh My Ass Off every time I see or hear it.

    “Pwned” originates from a World of Warcraft map maker who misspelled “Owned”, and didn’t realize his mistake until it was too late. It has advanced into mainstream culture since then.
    On pronunciation, it was originally “pwned” with a bit of a u sound in there. Because of how it’s become a part of our culture, the pronunciation ranges anywhere from “pOned” to “pewneed”(I’ve heard it like that. From a little kid who assumed I knew nothing of it, he referred to it as “Halo-Speak” >_> ). G4 is the most mainstream place this is used frequently, and they pronounce it “POwned”. So most people pronounce it like that. Fighting over a typo is silly. Seems like a lot of people consider it serious business. πŸ˜‰
    Now that’s resolved. M’kay? Pronounce it however you want, believe whatever story of its origin you want to believe. It doesn’t really matter. Elandur, Spezz, thanks for the input.
    Now, onto the movie. Even if it didn’t seem like something big at first, it turned out great. A lot of people love this. Congrats. As for critique, I think the falling scenes were a bit drawn out, and seemed a bit misplaced. I realized while watching this, was that if the turrets really fell that much, they would be used to it. Hence, no swearing. A lot of the swearing in it seemed unnecessary, but it really added character to the turrets. If you were to fix some things, I would recommend a new intro, and changing up the falling scene.
    I loved some of the humor you used in there. “No shit, sherlock” was wonderful, I’ve used that phrase quite a few times before. A lot like the “I take off my robe and wizard hat” joke in LeetWorld. Great references. The Cake reference and companion cube parts are great Portal jokes.
    Great job you guys, keep up the good work.

Dialog is funny as hell, your montage is spot on, background music is perfect. The references are great too. Don’t tell me someone is old enough to have seen Butch Cassidy & the Sundance Kid – or was the long shiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiit fall from somewhere else (and stolen)? Whatever. This movie is a lesson in filmmaking – everything works. Congrats. Too bad you can’t make money from it. If this was a moonlight effort, you’re in the wrong business.

    This is a work of comical genius. Not even kidding, whenever I feel like shit I watch this and it makes me smile =].
    Personally I like the swearing, though many disagree. I think it adds to the theme because it makes them more normal. And in all actuallity, they dont swear that much anyways so it “doesnt ruin the inocence.”
    I have personally played Portal and it is a super fun game and this just gives you a different look at it. I get serious while playing Portal because its like a giant brain teaser. Its fun but it also makes you think.
    What Im getting at is that this and the game are both works of art and just like a musiem’s painting people get different thoughts and feelings about each piece. So some says its a “rip off” or a “bad use of swearing” or what have you… but if you look at what it took to put this together you have to appreciate it and its enginuity.

True it is enjoyed by more immature people, but if you notice something about the characters, they ARE immature and that is the point.
